If you are one of those people who are fed up with the whole sitting in an office scenario and kicking the cables under your desk for amusement then this could be just what you’re looking for!
The Super Yacht industry is a massive state of affairs and in my opinion must have a huge affect on our world as we know it! Over the years I have worked in the industry I have learnt some interesting facts, one of them being that if there is a better way of wasting $200,000.000 then buying a Super Yacht must surely take the prize!
Super Yachts are well known for having the best service available in the hospitality industry and that’s a pretty good effort if you think about the elements that have to be considered! I myself fortunately enough have not been in a position where i was forced into an attempt to serve a bowl of spaghetti to possibly richest man of whatever country with 60 Knots of wind and 10 foot waves juggling the boat around like it was a bath toy!
Anyway I was meant to be making this sound fun so I guess I should point out some of the good parts of this industry. Well as you can imagine the rich and famous come to expect good food, so in most circumstances you will find a pretty top notch chef on board and he will be there to make sure the guests get the best food available to man kind. Now, because the whole thing about yachts is to be able to run with super efficiency and it just really isn't all that efficient if you require one chef for the guest and another for the crew, in most cases the same chef cooks for both meaning the crew also get the best food available to man kind, just with cheaper ingredients!
I believe there is a perk to every job and for me the good food and the £500 half empty bottles of wine the guests would normally leave after every meal was certainly not the hardest part of working on a super yacht. In fact you know its going to be a good trip when the guests bring on so many crates of 1998 Don Perignon they couldn't posibly finish it all even if they had it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
So I guess there is another major benefit to the super Yachting industry and that would be the travelling. In 7 years I have seen between 27 and 30 different countries and when I say seen, I am actually using that word quite literally because one of the disadvantages of the industry is that you don’t always get the time to explore every where you visit. You can generally increase your chances by applying for the right position on the yacht to work in. For instance, an engineer would be a bad choice because you are doomed to the responsibility of pretty much the whole boat and a extremely limited to how long you can stay away and leave the yacht with out a mechanic. In this industy and i think its the same for most there is always something to go wrong, its just when is it going to happen. Normaly the minute you even think about taking a break! Now some may argue this but in my opinion a stewardess is another poor choice because a lot of the work a stewardess does is all on the interior and really limits them to what they actually get to see. A captain would be an obvious choice but who wants the burden of driving a multi million dollar vehicle around with the added worry that the owner is probably powerful enough to make the rest of your life a living nightmare should you accidentally bump the 200 Tone yacht against the key!!
Nope, my choice is clear and that to be either a good old Deck Hand or if you had a few years of experience maybe a Boson.
